Santa Susana is the Tapo Street side of Simi Valley: the blocks from Los Angeles Avenue to Cochran Street, between Sequoia Avenue and Stearns Street, that grew up around the valley's old railroad stop, plus Larwin streets reaching the 118 west of Tapo Canyon Road. Most of its roughly 2,300 homes were mapped from 1957 to 1972 by Wright Ranch's subdividers, Hilgard and Woodvale Homes, and Larwin.

About

Living in Santa Susana (Tapo Street area)

Southern Pacific built its Santa Susana depot in 1903 on the north side of Los Angeles Avenue just east of Tapo Street, and a small town grew around it. Wright Ranch Tract Unit No. 1, recorded in September 1957, was among the valley's first postwar tracts, and the 1960s filled in the rest. At incorporation in 1969, voters chose the name Simi Valley over Santa Susana, and in 1975 the depot was moved east to Katherine Road, where it is now a museum.

Tapo Street is the shopping spine; the city's 2024 Envision Simi Valley specific plan zones it for mixed use and names Santa Susana Plaza as a site for transit-oriented housing. Townhomes such as Meadowbrook and Coventry Court, The Marketplace condominiums and a senior apartment community mix with the older houses. Sequoia Park and the Rancho Santa Susana Community Park serve the area. The Kadota Fig farm lots north of Cochran and Auburn Lane near Stearns have their own pages.

Simi Valley uses the name Santa Susana in several places: this original townsite around Tapo Street, the Santa Susana Knolls and Santa Susana Pass at the valley's east end, and Santa Susana High School. School assignments vary by address; SVUSD's Find My School locator confirms them.
