Atherwood

Atherwood is the cluster of tract neighborhoods north of the 118 Freeway between Erringer Road and Sycamore Drive, sharing its name with Atherwood Avenue, Atherwood Park and Atherwood Elementary. Larwin-related companies mapped most of its streets between 1965 and 1977, after a small 1961 tract on Luray Circle, and later infill brought the total to roughly 1,000 homes by 2004.

About

Living in Atherwood

The oldest homes, on Luray and Blue Ridge circles, come from a 1961 county tract. Kingspark followed in 1965, Tract 1725 in 1968 and the large Tract 2030 around Atherwood Avenue in 1970. Montara and Tract 2112 reached toward the Big Sky hills in 1972 and 1973, and Tract 2332 filled in north of Alamo Street in 1977 and 1978. Most of these homes run about 1,100 to 2,800 square feet.

Later projects used the leftover parcels: Amber Grove Court and Sally Street (1981), the Oakridge Terrace condominiums (1986 map), small-lot homes on Sienna Lane and Candia Court (1996), the gated Jasmine Glen Estates and Arbor Glen below the hills (1997 and 1999 maps), and Sycamore Shade's 108 condominiums (2003). Atherwood Park on Alamo Street is the shared green space, and Simi Valley Town Center is a short drive west.

The lay of the land

Blocks of 1960s and 1970s single-family homes between the 118 and the Big Sky foothills, with two gated enclaves at the foot of the hills and two condominium communities at the edges; Atherwood Park and Atherwood Elementary sit near the middle.

Atherwood is used here as an umbrella name taken from the avenue, park and school, not an official subdivision name. Many residents know their street by its tract number or by a local subdivision name, such as Kingspark or Montara, instead.
