Box Canyon
Box Canyon is an unincorporated pocket of the Simi Hills along Box Canyon Road, a two-lane county road that runs about 2.1 miles from the Los Angeles County line north to Santa Susana Pass Road. Most of its lots trace to eight subdivision maps filed in 1925 and 1926 for Amos F. and Helen B. Mortimer and partners, and county records show roughly 120 parcels with buildings today.

Living in Box Canyon
Four of those maps line the canyon itself: Box Canyon View Tract No. 1 and Chatsworth Highland Springs Tract No. 1 (March 1926), then Chatsworth Highland Springs Tract No. 2 and the Chatsworth Lake Mesa Tract (July 1926). They cut the slopes into small lots, and many have since been combined under single homes. Farther up the canyon, houses on Studio Road and Bryant Drive sit on larger parcels outside the 1920s maps. The other four maps (Santa Susana Park Nos. 1 to 3 and Santa Susana Heights No. 1) cover the mesa along Mesa Drive and Lilac Lane, just south of Santa Susana Pass Road at the county line.
Box Canyon is governed by Ventura County, not the City of Simi Valley. It lies in the county's Fourth Supervisorial District, and the county maintains Box Canyon Road. From the 1950s until January 2, 1973, the canyon had its own county fire station, the original Fire Station 44; the Ventura County Fire Department did not use that number again until 1989, for its Wood Ranch station. The county's ZIP map puts most of the canyon in 91304 (Canoga Park) and the Lilac Lane area in 93063 (Simi Valley). The county General Plan designates most of the surrounding hills Open Space, and Santa Susana Pass State Historic Park starts at the county line just east of Mesa Drive.
