About

Living in Berylwood

The county tract maps tell the story. Tract 1551 came first. Map Homes, William Development Corp. and Prime Homes recorded its western units in September and October 1963, and the Maiden-Fair Company followed with the Claudia–Darcy section in August 1965. In early 1964, Earl Homes and Bar Homes, each with Maiden-Fair as co-owner, mapped Tract 1554 out toward Sycamore Drive. Most of the maps also note that the Berylwood-Simi Company owned a share of the oil and mineral rights under the land. Later building filled in the gaps: the Larwin Group's fourplexes on Prather Street and Phipps Avenue (1971), the Sunnyglen houses near Los Angeles Avenue (1979) and the Parkview condominiums on Heywood Street (1981 and 1984).

Berylwood Park, at 1955 Bridget Avenue, is where neighbors meet. It has a ball diamond, sand volleyball, a kids' half-court for basketball, a multipurpose room, picnic areas, playgrounds and the park district's Skate Plaza, which is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. Berylwood Elementary takes up a 19-acre site on Heywood Street, and the Arroyo Simi channel runs along the neighborhood's southern edge.
