Las Virgenes Unified runs the public schools for Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Hidden Hills and the Los Angeles County side of Westlake Village. The district describes itself as about 10,000 students in fifteen schools: eight TK–5 elementary schools, Mariposa School of Global Education (a Waldorf-inspired public TK–8 school), three middle schools (grades 6–8), two high schools (Agoura High and Calabasas High) and Buttercup Preschool. The district says many of its schools are at full capacity, so a request to attend a school other than your neighborhood school is never guaranteed.

How assignment works

How schools are assigned

Your home address sets your neighborhood school at each level: an elementary school, a middle school and a high school. The district's Find Your School map (images.lvusd.org/locator) lets you type an address and shows which elementary, middle and high school boundaries it falls inside; addresses outside every boundary are reported as such. The district says you don't need to file any application if your child will attend the neighborhood school, and it directs enrollment questions to the school office.

Six elementary schools have their own attendance areas: Bay Laurel, Chaparral, Lupin Hill, Round Meadow, White Oak and Yerba Buena. The Agoura Hills area around Sumac and Willow is one shared area: the locator lists Sumac Elementary, Willow Elementary and Mariposa School of Global Education together for addresses there. Sumac and Willow present this to families as "One Neighborhood, 2 Choices": Sumac L-STEM, which teaches in English and Spanish (dual immersion, TK–5) and is described as a School of Choice program, and Willow, which the flyer describes as focused on academics, the arts and enrichment. Mariposa, the Waldorf-inspired TK–8 school, shares Sumac's campus address on Calmfield Avenue.

The district does not publish a written explanation of how families in the shared area are placed among the three schools, so ask the district office or the schools before enrolling.

For grades 6–8 the map shows three middle school areas (A.E. Wright, A.C. Stelle and Lindero Canyon), and for grades 9–12 two high school areas (Agoura High and Calabasas High). TK students register at their home elementary school.

Choosing a school

Choosing a different school

To attend a different LVUSD school, families file a School of Choice permit (the district's intradistrict transfer). Any student living inside LVUSD boundaries may apply, as may nonresident students who were already released by their home district and permitted into LVUSD in an earlier year. Applications for 2027–28 opened October 1, 2026 and close March 1, 2027.

Applications submitted by December 18, 2026 are processed as "early decision," and those families learn in January whether a seat is available. Requests after the deadline are handled on a rolling, space-available basis from a waitlist. The district does not describe a lottery; it says many schools are full and a permit is not a guarantee.

Students not currently in LVUSD send report cards, attendance records and behavior records for the current and past two years (not needed for TK or kindergarten unless the child has an IEP or 504 plan; behavior records aren't needed for elementary or 6th grade requests). An approved permit lasts for the student's years at that school. Changing schools again, including going back to the neighborhood school, takes a new application, and transfers are not made after the school year starts.

Approval gives up the student's seat at the neighborhood school. There are no bus routes for School of Choice students; parents provide transportation. The district offers a family-run carpool sign-up (lvusdcarpool.org) that it says it does not verify or manage.

Buttercup Preschool does not accept permits.

Programs and how students get in

  • Spanish Dual Immersion (Sumac L-STEM Elementary): Sumac is one of the schools for the shared Sumac/Willow/Mariposa attendance area. Families elsewhere in LVUSD apply with a School of Choice permit; nonresidents apply with an interdistrict permit. Students learn in English and Spanish from TK through fifth grade; the program began in 2011–12, and the school's flyer says students continue into a middle school dual program (Lindero Canyon Middle lists Spanish Dual Immersion among its departments).
  • Mariposa School of Global Education: Listed with Sumac and Willow for the shared attendance area on the district locator; families from other areas apply with a School of Choice permit. The district doesn't publish a separate admission process. A public TK–8 school guided by Waldorf-inspired methods, with classes that keep the same teacher for two or three years; it holds monthly tours from November to February and enrolls about 400 students.
  • International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (Agoura High): Offered at Agoura High School. The district's pages don't describe a separate application or how students from the Calabasas High area join. Students who complete all IB requirements graduate with both an Agoura High diploma and an IB diploma.
  • AP Capstone (Calabasas High): Course sequence at Calabasas High School; AP Seminar can also be taken on its own as an elective. Students who pass AP Seminar and AP Research plus four other AP exams earn the College Board's AP Capstone Diploma.
  • Buttercup Preschool: Online application that opens August 15 of the year before a child turns three (for 2026–27 the window ran August 15 to October 1, 2025). LVUSD residents get priority; applying does not guarantee a place, and permits are not accepted. An inclusive preschool for 3- and 4-year-olds on the Yerba Buena Elementary campus, where children with and without special needs learn together; tuition is charged for general education students.
Transfers & enrolling

Transfers and enrollment

Coming from (or leaving for) another district

Families who live outside LVUSD apply for an Incoming Interdistrict Permit, on the same timeline: October 1, 2026 to March 1, 2027 for 2027–28, with early decision for applications in by December 18, 2026 and rolling, space-available review after that. Apply to LVUSD first and name a second-choice school in case the first is full. If approved, enroll online, then get a release from your home district (the district office, not the school) within 30 days of LVUSD's approval or within 30 days of when the home district's permit window opens, and send it to LVUSD.

LVUSD looks at attendance, tardies, truancies, academic progress and discipline records. Reasons it considers include a parent working at least 15 hours a week within district boundaries, a sibling already enrolled, child care inside the district, a specialized program and continuing education; other reasons are considered case by case. Once approved and released, students do not reapply each year and may stay through the top grade of that school unless something changes, such as the home address.

A permit can be revoked for poor attendance, insufficient academic progress, discipline or a change in residency. A denial can be appealed to LVUSD within 5 calendar days, and a final LVUSD denial can be appealed to the Los Angeles County Office of Education within 30 calendar days. LVUSD residents who want to leave for another district use an Outgoing Interdistrict Permit.

Enrolling

New students enroll online by creating a family account at app.lvusd.org/enrollment. Enrollment stays conditional until the school has every required document: a residency verification form plus proof of residence (one of a current property tax bill, mortgage statement, lease or escrow papers, three current proofs of payment, and two different current utility bills), a parent or guardian photo ID, proof of the child's age such as a certified birth certificate or passport, the prior report card (not needed for TK or kindergarten; an unofficial transcript for high school), up-to-date immunization records, the Los Angeles County pediatric TB risk assessment, and for TK, kindergarten and first graders new to public school, an oral health (dental) assessment. Families using a School of Choice or interdistrict permit must go through the permit page first; nonresidents should not enroll until the permit is approved.

Eligible TK students register at their home elementary school. The district's TK page still shows the 2025–26 rule (born September 2, 2020 through September 1, 2021) and has not been updated for later years. Questions go to the school office.
