Living in Seminole Springs
The springs date to 1911, when crews drilling for oil struck hot mineral water instead; it rises from about 2,600 feet down at 116 degrees. Hot tubs were in place by 1921, and a dam and cabins came later. Newspapers reported weekend crowds of more than 1,000, and a 1941 guide described cottages, a bathhouse and an open-air mineral plunge under the sycamores. The spa had closed by 1959.
In 1986 residents formed a nonprofit and bought the park, then reported at 55 acres, for $4 million. They still run it as a cooperative. On November 9, 2018, the wind-driven Woolsey Fire jumped the 101 Freeway near Kanan Road and burned into the canyon. CAL FIRE's damage inspectors logged 109 mobile homes destroyed in the park, about half the community.
