Malibou Lake

Malibou Lake is a private lake community in unincorporated Los Angeles County, just south of Mulholland Highway near Cornell. Businessmen George Wilson and Bertram Lackey bought 350 acres here in 1922 and built a 44-foot dam where Medea and Triunfo creeks meet. Six tract maps recorded between 1924 and 1929 laid out cabin lots on the south side of the lake, where about 100 houses stand today.

About

Living in Malibou Lake

Wilson and Lackey promoted it as a hunting and fishing club "an hour from town" and owned it until 1926. The lake stayed dry for nearly four years, until storms filled it in the spring of 1926. The first owners built vacation cabins, and some began living here year-round after World War II. The club's 24-bedroom clubhouse from 1924 burned in 1936. Its smaller replacement, designed by Russell and Alpaugh, still stands. The lake and shoreline are private, and the setting has more than 100 screen credits, from Frankenstein (1931) to The Ring (2002).

Living here means planning around the mountains. The lake can overflow in big storms, as it did in 1966, 1983 and 1992. CAL FIRE inspection records list more than 60 houses destroyed around the lake in the 2018 Woolsey Fire, and county records still show no house on a number of the tract lots. Homes on Lake Vista Drive and along the north and east shores were never part of the 1920s tract maps. Malibu Creek State Park borders the community, and Paramount Ranch and Peter Strauss Ranch are a short drive away.
