Living in Hillrise
Hillrise is usually counted among Agoura's first housing tracts, along with Liberty Canyon and Lake Lindero. Its first map was recorded in October 1967, when the area was still unincorporated county land, and two more followed in 1968 and 1969. A 1980 tract added 78 roomier houses on Buffwood Place and Oakpath Drive in the mid-1980s.
A good share of the land stays open. Each of the original maps set aside lots where residential building rights went to the county, and the city zones part of the neighborhood as deed-restricted open space. Shopping centers on Kanan Road sit at the east edge, Chumash Park is just across Kanan, and the freeway is about half a mile south.
