About

Living in Cornell

The settlement sits on Rancho Las Virgenes land that a 1917 map, Tract 2804, divided into six ranch lots of roughly 430 to 640 acres. Its busiest years ran from the 1910s to the 1950s, and a county library branch opened in its general store and post office in 1915. The Old Place, a restaurant since 1970, occupies a former country store and post office. Across the road, Peter Strauss Ranch was automaker Harry Miller's 1920s retreat and later the Lake Enchanto resort, a name sometimes used for Cornell itself. It and Paramount Ranch, east on Cornell Road, both burned in the 2018 Woolsey Fire.

Housing is a mix: homes from the 1930s onward on third- to half-acre lots in the 1925 village tract, 1980s and 1990s houses on upper Triunfo Drive, Vista del Arroyo and Westhaven Drive, the gated estates of Vintage at Hidden Park, and acreage homes on Sierra Creek Road and Waring Drive. Peacocks roam the lanes and many properties keep horses. Addresses are Agoura Hills 91301, County Fire Station 65 is on Cornell Road near the Agoura Hills city line, and Kanan Road is the main route north to the 101.

The lay of the land

Cornell has no official boundary. The road through the old village was mapped as Cornell Road in the 1920s and is now Mulholland Highway; today's Cornell Road runs north from Mulholland past Paramount Ranch toward Agoura Hills. Home counts cover the six recorded tracts only.
