Oak Park Unified is the TK–12 district for Oak Park, an unincorporated community in southeastern Ventura County on the Los Angeles County line. It has three elementary schools (Brookside, Oak Hills and Red Oak), one middle school (Medea Creek) and one comprehensive high school (Oak Park High), plus Oak Park Independent School (TK–12 independent study), Oak View High School (a small alternative high school for grades 10–12) and Oak Park Neighborhood Preschool. Besides Oak Park residents, the district takes students from other districts through California's District of Choice program and inter-district permits.
Families who live in Las Virgenes Unified can't use District of Choice and must use an inter-district permit instead.
Which OPUSD schools serve an address?
Type a street address. The answer comes from OPUSD's elementary street list (2017), and links OPUSD's own locator to confirm.
OPUSD sets elementary schools by street list, so its area is shaded whole; type an address to check it. Dashed lines are district boundaries. Point at an area for its name, or tap anywhere for the schools there.

How schools are assigned
Only the elementary school depends on your street. The district's Elementary Schools Boundaries List (a PDF street list linked from its Directions, Maps, Boundaries and Street Lists page) assigns each street to Brookside, Oak Hills or Red Oak. A few streets are listed for both Oak Hills and Brookside, so check with the district office if your street is one of them.
There is one comprehensive middle school and one comprehensive high school, so every Oak Park resident is placed at Medea Creek Middle School for grades 6–8 and Oak Park High School for grades 9–12; the district says no boundary list is needed for those grades.
Oak Park residents do not apply to attend district schools. If your child is new to the district, call or write to the office of your assigned school and the staff will start the registration with you.
Choosing a different school
Board Policy 5116.1 (last revised November 18, 2025) lets any student who lives in the district apply to any district school, whatever the home address. Under the policy, requests are filed between May 1 and June 1 of the school year before the transfer would start (May 1 to June 1, 2027 for 2027–28). No student living in a school's attendance area can be displaced by a transfer.
Priority goes to students in situations named in law (for example, victims of bullying or of a violent crime at school, or students facing documented threats), to siblings of students already at the requested school, and to children of a parent whose main workplace is that school. If a school gets more requests than it has room for, the remaining seats are filled by a random drawing, with a waiting list. Approved families must confirm within 10 school days, and approved students don't reapply each year but may be displaced if a school becomes overcrowded.
The district generally does not provide transportation for students attending outside their attendance area (the exception: on request, it provides transportation help to a student eligible for free or reduced-price meals who changed schools because of bullying). The district's website does not post an intradistrict request form or list of open seats, so ask the district office how to apply. School tours are for prospective families and are not meant for current families looking to switch schools within the district.
Programs and how students get in
- Oak Park Independent School (OPIS): Enroll through the OPIS office; nonresidents come in through District of Choice or an inter-district permit like any OPUSD student. A TK–12 independent study school on the district office campus where teachers meet with students weekly; high school students can take classes at Oak Park High and join its sports, dances and graduation.
- Oak View High School: Contact the school or district office; the district's pages don't describe a referral or application process. A small alternative high school for grades 10–12 where most students come to catch up on credits in a more personal setting.
- Oak Park Neighborhood Preschool: Open to Oak Park residents and nonresidents as space allows; contact the school for a tour or information. A Reggio Emilia-inspired preschool run by the district on the Oak Hills Elementary campus.
Transfers and enrollment
Coming from (or leaving for) another district
District of Choice (DOC): the online application for 2027–28 is open October 1, 2026 through December 31, 2026, through the district's Q ParentConnection portal (oakparkusd.vcoe.org). Applying early gives no advantage; all applications are reviewed after the window closes. If a grade has more applicants than spaces, priority goes to students with a sibling in the district, foster youth and students eligible for free or reduced-price meals, and students from military families; the remaining spaces are filled by a random lottery held at the February 17, 2027 school board meeting.
Students not selected go on a randomized waitlist that expires May 1 and are encouraged to apply for an inter-district permit. A DOC acceptance lasts through high school graduation as long as the family stays in the same home district. OPUSD is not taking DOC applications from families living in Las Virgenes Unified; they must use the inter-district permit process.
Inter-district permits are separate paper permits. The home district must release the student first, then OPUSD decides based on space in the grade level and the permit's conditions. Permits are available year-round, and OPUSD reviews them after DOC placements are filled.
A parent who works for OPUSD, or who is physically employed at least 10 hours a week in a commercial space inside the district, can apply on that basis without a release from the home district. Permits between Ventura County districts normally renew each year under a countywide agreement; permits with districts outside the county, such as LAUSD, are handled individually. A denied permit can be appealed to the county board of education within 30 calendar days of the final denial.
Enrolling
Oak Park residents with a child new to the district contact the school office to start registration: Brookside (818) 597-4200, Oak Hills (818) 707-4224, Red Oak (818) 707-7972; Medea Creek, Oak Park High, Oak Park Independent School and Oak View High also take new students through their offices. Returning students re-enroll online through Q ParentConnection; for 2026–27 that opened July 21, 2026. For 2026–27, a child is eligible for transitional kindergarten if they turn 4 on or before September 1, 2026, and for kindergarten if they turn 5 on or before September 1, 2026.
Nonresident families enroll after being accepted through District of Choice or approved for an inter-district permit. The 2026–27 school tour schedule lists monthly tours at each school; elementary and preschool tours are for parents only.
